for a good family computer? Here are some of our picks for desktop
PCs at low Canadian prices. Our
favorite online store for desktop PCs is TigerDirect.ca. The
selection is vast and the prices are low. They also stock computer
peripherals, as well as barebone kits, digital cameras, wireless
networking accessories, and more. Many of the desktop PCs are
either recertified or refurbished—they have been taken out of the
box by customers (or in the case of recertification, the box has
simply been opened) and returned to stores. The computers have been
tested and repaired if need be, recertified, and ready to go.
I have personally purchased two
computers, which I use for testing children's software, from Tiger
Direct. One was refurbished, and the other was recertified. The
price for these computers was considerably lower than I have found
elsewhere, and the computers were (and still are) perfect.

FutureShop.ca - I can
no longer recommend this store. Although most of my
experiences with them have gone well (they do offer free
shipping on most items, which is a real plus), when things go
wrong, their customer service is lacking. Of course, this
happened to me once, but the customer service was so poor that
I will not buy from them again. I ordered a freezer from
FutureShop online, it came damaged, I refused it, and they
didn't give me a refund nor a new freezer. They needed to wait
for the investigation (which was not about me, but between the
freight company and FutureShop) before fixing it with the
customer. Repeated attempts to get my refund failed, so I had
to go through my credit card company to get a refund. Even
after all of that hassle - 2-1/2 months of waiting with my
money tied up with Future Shop, and no resolution on their
side - they did nothing to compensate me. Very frustrating
experience.

- Sometimes you'll find decent prices on desktop PC's at
BestBuy. I find that prices are better all-around at TigerDirect.ca,
however.
