We love the concept of the Plug & Play TV games, and
thoroughly enjoy other editions in the line, but find TV Games
Featuring Ms. Pacman rather disappointing. Why? The feature
game, which could very well be the lure for many people who purchase
the product, features frustrating controls.
I am a huge fan of Ms. Pacman, so of course I was excited about
playing this game. The controls are very challenging because the
joystick is 8-way rather than 4-way, so it is very sensitive--too
sensitive. After much effort, I managed to go further than the first
two acts, but the simple truth is that I can play Ms. Pacman almost
endlessly at an arcade. Mind you, this hasn't deterred me from
playing the game in my free time, but considering Ms. Pacman is the
headliner of the unit, we would have hoped that the controls were
better.
Otherwise, the game is rendered well, with all of the authentic
(neurotic) sound effects and music.
We love the convenience of the Jakks Pacific TV Games. Although
they are battery-operated, turning off the unit in between games
saves batteries, and set-up is easy.
The other 4 games are: Galaga, Pole Position, Xevious, and Mappy.
With the exception of Pole Position which has a steep learning curve
(uses a joystick, of course, instead of the original steering
wheel), these games play well. Galaga is an excellent translation of
the original arcade game.
Pros: Excellent conversion of games in terms of graphics and
audio. Cons: No high-score saving feature once the unit is turned
off; battery-operated; no two-player mode.
